General DIY Mold Clean-up: Steps For Success

In addition to the expected places, like bathrooms and basements, mold can grow in unexpected places like exterior walls, patio furniture, mattresses, and carpets. As long as the three needs of moisture, nutrients, and temperature are present, mold has an opportunity to thrive.

Some tips for general mold clean-up are:

document damage and cleaning with photographs and notes
scrub mold off hard surfaces using detergent and water
dry cleaned surfaces thoroughly

Mold can stain many surfaces. It may not be possible to restore some surfaces to their pre-mold appearance.

Porous materials may need to be disposed of rather than cleaned. Carpets, ceiling tiles, and wallpaper can get mold in microscopic cracks and crevices and make it difficult to clean completely. The problem will return when moisture, heat and nutrients are provided.

Do not caulk or paint directly on molded surfaces. Paint will have difficulty adhering and will eventually peel away from the surface. Clean the mold thoroughly and dry completely before painting.
