Fusarium is commonly found outdoors in vegetation. However, from time to time it may be brought indoors where it can grow and thrive if the conditions are right. Fusarium is a mold that is usually white and fuzzy, but later grows to a pinkish hue. It grows rapidly in a moist environment. Home humidifiers are often a source of Fusarium mold.
The most common conditions from exposure to Fusarium are:
- Eye infection
- Skin and Nail Infection
Additionally, some strains of Fusarium may cause gastrointestinal illnesses, and illnesses which affect the female reproductive system.
In the 1970s, the Soviet Union was accused of using Fusarium as a means of biological warfare by creating a substance known as ‘Yellow Rain’.
